Stabilizing Distributed Model Predictive Control: Gradient- and ADMM-Based Approaches

In distributed model predictive control (DMPC) problems, stability assurance is a demanding issue since the well-known terminal cost and constraint technique is not readily adaptable to the distributed schemes. It is already known that with a sufficiently large horizon length the DMPC scheme can be stabilized under specific circumstances.

The stopping criterion of the DMPC algorithm can then be assessed through determination of two scalars: an upper bound for the cost of the next sampling period and a lower bound for the optimal cost of the current one. While the former scalar can be determined by calculation of a feasible solution to DMPC problem, the latter one is dependent on the chosen distributed optimization method which is utilized to handle DMPC problem. In this talk, two distributed optimization algorithms, i.e.
gradient- and ADMM-based algorithms, will be proposed at first. These two methods will then be compared from different aspects, e.g. convergence speed, suboptimality, distributed implementation, etc.
