Materials Characterization and Testing

Non-Destructive and Contactless Measurement With Optical Techniques

We develop application-oriented measurement systems for material characterization and testing. In doing so, our scientists draw on expertise in optical system and measurement technology, spectroscopy and the development of innovative data processing techniques. The technologies range from optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the visible and near-infrared spectral range, hyperspectral imaging in the near- and mid-infrared, and time-domain spectroscopy in the terahertz frequency range to electronic system concepts in the millimeter-wave range. All of these techniques operate in a non-destructive and non-contact manner.

The technologies we use are diverse.

We Use:

  • optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the visible and near-infrared spectral range
  • hyperspectral imaging in the near and mid-infrared spectral range
  • time domain spectroscopy in the terahertz frequency range
  • electronic system design in the millimeter-wave range

All of these techniques operate in a non-destructive and non-contact manner.

Typical Material Testing Tasks are:

  • Detecting internal defects in ceramics, plastics or even fiber-reinforced composites
  • Determining individual layer thicknesses in multilayer systems such as coatings or multilayer components such as tubes or films

Material Characterization Is Often Based on Spectroscopic Tasks:

  • Identifying and distinguishing materials
  • Determining specific characteristics such as moisture or sugar content

Our Offer for Material Characterization and Testing Includes

  • Technology consulting
  • Initial tests and feasibility studies
  • Measuring studies and measurements on customers site
  • Development from single components up to individual complete systems
  • Equipment rent

Fields of Activity

Application Center TeraTec

With our application centre, we enable you to easily test innovative measurement technologies for your applications. We advise you across technologies to find the best solution for you.

Quantum Technology

We develop measuring and testing systems for the quality control of composite materials and coatings using technologies such as spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging or white light interferometry.

Layer Thickness Measurement

Optical techniques can be used to measure layer thicknesses contactlessly and non-destructively. The testing of multi-layer systems is also possible.

Material Analysis

Chemical substances can be detected and identified using optical measurement techniques such as NIR spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging or terahertz spectroscopy.

Non-Destructive Testing

With our terahertz and millimetre wave inspection systems, you can inspect non-metallic components for their internal structure and hidden defects non-destructively and without contact.

3D Micro- and Mesoprinting

In the field of activity we produce almost arbitrarily complex, high-resolution prototypes and components, e.g. for biomedical applications or for validating model calculations.
