Parametric Model Reduction for Optimal Control of Heating Networks

Abstract:

This contribution focuses on the application of a reduced order model on the optimal control of heating networks. A suitable model for the description of heating networks results in an index-1 differential algebraic equation with both nonlinear dynamics and constraints. To allow for a real-time solution of an optimal control, a reduced order model is derived. The central challenge in its derivation arises from the time varying advection of the thermal energy on the network. By splitting thermal dynamics and hydraulic constraints, a linear time-varying system results. Based on a moment-matching technique applied to transfer functions at selected linear models, a global Galerkin projection is determined.
The latter allows for a stability preserving reduction of the thermal transport. The effectiveness of the reduced model is evaluated for the optimal control of the power plant feed-in at the example of an existing heating network.
