When Mathematics Connects – KLAIM 2025 Focuses on Coupled Problems

Intensive exchange and networking also characterized the third edition of the Kaiserslautern Applied and Industrial Mathematics Days – KLAIM: More than 60 scientists accepted the invitation from the two organizers, Prof. Dr. Anita Schöbel, Director of Fraunhofer ITWM, and Prof. Dr. Bernd Simeon from the Department of Mathematics at the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU). KLAIM has thus established itself as a forum for applied mathematicians from universities, research laboratories and industry.

The main topic for 2025 is »Coupled Problems«. Simulation and optimization methods are becoming increasingly complex as they link phenomena across different scales and physical domains. More than 40 short presentations and discussion panels covered topics such as:

Multiscale Methods in Materials Science
Multiphysics Simulation
Co-Simulation and Control in Coupled Technical Applications
Coupled Optimization Problems
Solver Coupling and High-Performance Computing

We asked the three keynote speakers why they came to Kaiserslautern and what they expect from KLAIM.

»I happily followed Bernd Simeon's invitation because Kaiserslautern and Fraunhofer ITWM are undoubtedly one of the centers for applied mathematics in Germany, promoting interdisciplinarity, i.e., the exchange between mathematics, physics, and engineering. In my view, coupled problems and interdisciplinarity have a lot in common. Coupled problems can be solved by loosely exchanging individual problems or individual fields, but this often leads to failure or wasted potential.

The same applies to interdisciplinarity. As often as it is discussed, the incredible potential of true interdisciplinarity is rarely actually realized. Here, too, loose exchanges have only limited success. What is needed is a real immersion in the other world(s), learning the respective language and way of thinking, mutual trust and inspiration. And what better way to get to know each other and network than at a scientific conference like KLAIM?«
