Division »Processes and Materials«

In our division »Processes and Materials«, we combine our expertise in the creation of Digital Twins down to the material level in order to improve your production processes and product development in the long term. This includes the modeling and simulation of manufacturing processes, material characterization and simulation, and the development of industry-ready simulation software and innovative testing methods.

Our Focus Areas:

  • Grid-Free Methods
We are developing MESHFREE software, a general continuum mechanical approach based on a Generalized Finite Difference Method (GFDM), also known as the Finite Pointset Method (FPM).
  • Material Characterization and Testing
We use optical and terahertz technologies to test materials without contact and develop systems for quality assurance and process control – from layer thickness measurement to inline inspection.
  • Material Simulation
We model and simulate complex material behavior, especially of textiles, foams, and composites, down to the micro level, calculate effective material properties, and create material maps and material databases.
  • Flow Processes
We develop powerful algorithms and software solutions for fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass transport. Our methods support the design and optimization of processes in the energy, textile, and plastics industries, among others.

Our Range of Services Includes:

  • We create specific Digital Twins for your processes and products.
  • We conduct studies with design and optimization proposals.
  • We offer suitability tests and contract measurements.
  • We develop customized simulation solutions and testing systems for your production processes and product developments.
  • We advise and support you in concept development and in setting up integrated simulation and testing processes in your company.

Grid-Free Methods

Innovative Point Cloud Technology

We develop a continuum mechanical approach based on a generalized finite difference method (GFDM), also known as the finite pointset method (FPM).

Virtualization of Product and Process Design

MESHFREE is software for fluid and continuum mechanics developed in collaboration with Fraunhofer SCAI. It combines the institutes' expertise in mesh-free simulation.

MESHFREE Software

MESHFREE is a powerful and flexible software solution for complex physical phenomena that is already in productive use for a wide range of applications.

Material Simulation

Technical Textiles and Nonwoven Materials

Simulation of nonwovens, knitted fabrics, spacer fabrics, smart textiles and bio-based yarns as well as textiles

Lightweight Construction and Insulation Materials

Composites, foams, fiber and particle reinforcement, additive manufacturing, process simulation

Microstructure Analysis

We develop algorithms and software for the spatial analysis of material structures using 2D and 3D images.

Flow Processes

Dynamics of Threads, Fibers, and Filaments

For the design of production processes for technical textiles.

Filtration, Separation and Reactive Transport

Separation processes, purification, absorption, reactive mass transport, catalysis and reaction engineering

Fluid Dynamical Process Design

The key expertise lies in the combination of existing tools, like ANSYS Fluent or OpenFOAM, with highly customized models.
