Research for the Automotive Industry at ITWM

AI in Vehicle Engineering for the Digital Transformation of the Automotive Industry

It is not only our division »Mathematics for Vehicle Engineering« that deals with innovative solutions for the automotive industry; our other departments also contribute to the digital transformation of the sector with artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithms in vehicle engineering, among other things. From research in battery development, to simulations of paint systems or the deployment of airbags, to analyses of individual driving profiles, our methods can be found in all areas.

Application Examples and Projects

All divisions and departments contribute to the digital transformation of the automotive industry with various projects. The departments and divisions are listed in the tabs with their projects:

Mathematics for Vehicle Engineering

In our division Mathematics for Vehicle Engeneering almost everything revolves around topics of the automotive industry. We focus our system simulation activities on vehicle-environment-human interaction and develop tire simulation models and methods for invariant system excitation. The Technikum combines the simulation and measurement techniques of the division.

The VMC®-EcoEstimator is a virtual sales assistant in app form with which sales staff advise their customers transparently and individually on fuel-saving technologies.

Mathematics for Vehicle Engineering

Tire Models and Simulations

CDTire is a physical tire model family. It supports engineers as part of modern Multi-Body Simulation tools.

Mathematics for Vehicle Engineering

Simulation of Cables ans Hoses

IPS Cable Simulation can be used for the simulation of the many cables and hoses in the engine compartment of a vehicle.

Mathematics for Vehicle Engineering

Digital Environmental Data

Geographical data play an important role for the evaluation of statistical tests.

Mathematics for Vehicle Engineering

Dynamics and System Simulation

The simulation of e.g. motor dynamics, drive dynamics and behaviors of safety systems are essential for system development.

Mathematics for Vehicle Engineering

Digital Human Models and Human-Machine Interaction

We can ergonomically evaluate the dynamic movements of workers in production better than before.

Mathematics for Vehicle Engineering

Fatigue Testing

Plan and evaluate fatigue tests with JUROJIN with a focus on passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

Transport Processes

In the department transport processes, the main focus is on the optimization of products, the technical design of production processes or simulation-based measurement methods. These skills are also often very useful in the automotive industry.

Transport Processes

Airbag Deployment

We jointly develop a software tool for the producers of automobiles, which simulates the deployment process of an airbag.

Transport Processes

Temperature Field in a Floodlight

Because of their high luminosity the floodlights of ARRI have a significant heat output. We simulate the process.

Transport Processes

Refueling of Motor Vehicles

We developed a simulation tool to make the refueling of motor vehicle tanks as environmentally acceptable as possible.

Transport Processes

Grid-Free Simulations with MESHFREE

MESHFREE simulates e.g. rollover processes on sandy surfaces or the water crossing of a car with a grid-free method.

Flow and Material Simulation

In the Flow and Material Simulation department, there are mainly simulations and projects on electric vehicles in the automotive sector.

Flow and Material Simulation

Simulation of Diesel Particulate Filters

In cooperation with the Robert Bosch GmbH, we are working on the development of the latest particulate filter systems in the exhaust tract of diesel vehicles.

Flow and Material Simulation

Climate Control System for Electric Vehicles

The XERIC project is developing a new climate control system that is more energy efficient in battery-powered electric vehicles.

Flow and Material Simulation

Battery Simulation for Electric Drives

BEST helps both automakers and manufacturers of electric storage devices to build robust, safe batteries.

EU-Project ALMA

ALMA’s ambition is to develop a new type of battery-electric vehicle structure for passenger cars. The aim is to reduce the weight of the vehicle structure by up to 45 percent.

High Performance Computing

The High Performance Computing department is also contributing to the digital transformation of the automotive industry with its chargeBIG project.

High Performance Computing

Charging Infrastructure for Electric Cars

In the chargeBIG project we jointly create a new kind of charging infrastructure for electric drive vehicles.

Optimization

In the division of optimization, one project contributes to the reduction of the number of variants, which does not have a negative impact on market penetration.

Optimization

Reduction of Variants in Truck Chassis Packaging

We develop platform and product families for the reduction of variants.

Financial Mathematics

In the Financial Mathematics department, the automotive industry is optimized through data analysis.

Financial Mathematics

Data Science for Automotive

Data science and ML are essential technologies for the optimization of financial products in the automotive industry.

Image Processing

The Image Processing department is also active in the sector. A new system can detect barely perceptible surface defects on vehicle components.

Image Processing

Quality Assurance

With the aid of the newly developed system, visibly barely perceptible surface defects on vehicle components, i.e. bumps, dents, and ripples, are automatically recognized, classified, and marked.

System Analysis, Prognosis and Control

In the System Analysis, Prognosis and Control department, the best possible damping for passenger cars is calculated. The Matlab toolbox was developed for this purpose.

System Analysis, Prognosis and Control

Active Vibration Damping

We develop an automated robust controller design for active vibration damping.

Materials Characterization and Testing

For the painting process of car body parts, the experts of the Material Characterization and Testing department have developed a self-programming painting booth.

Materials Characterization and Testing

SelfPaint

In the »SelfPaint« project we are creating a new self-programming paint booth for batch size one, e.g. for painting processes of car body parts.
