Fraunhofer ITWM Trains BNT Teachers in Quantum Computing
To prepare for their work in the lab, three BNT teachers completed the »Certified Quantum Computing Professional« certificate course at Fraunhofer ITWM in Kaiserslautern and at Fraunhofer FOKUS. Dr. Alexander Geng from Fraunhofer ITWM and other experts from the Fraunhofer Society guided them through the program. »The lab combines quantum mechanics with programming, computational methods, and IT security. It also establishes connections to electrical engineering and information technology,« says Geng. »For us, the quantum competence lab in Trier represents a successful transfer of knowledge from science to the classroom. We cannot wait until the technology is widely available to start building the skills of tomorrow. Laying the groundwork early on opens up opportunities for young people and strengthens the state’s capacity for innovation. That’s why it’s important to connect teachers, schools, universities, and companies with one another today.«
Principal Marc Reis launched the lab and is convinced of its necessity: »Quantum technologies will shape the working world of today’s students. At BNT, they don’t just learn about these technologies from textbooks: They control real nuclear spins with radio-frequency pulses, program quantum circuits, and analyze measurement data themselves. Very few students have had this kind of hands-on experience so far. We want to change that at the BNT and throughout the region,« says Marc Reis.
This is how the transfer of knowledge becomes hands-on practice. The Quantum Competence Lab at the BNT in Trier demonstrates how teachers acquire new skills and then translate them into concrete learning opportunities. With the Quantum Competence Lab, a space has been created where young people not only learn about quantum technologies but also actively engage with them.
