It's a slightly unusual episode title – but hand on heart: Would you openly admit to ever having relieved yourself in a lake or swimming pool? Or maybe you've ever taken something from a store? Probably most of us would be reluctant to actually answer that question openly and honestly, if we had to answer in the affirmative. But how should science deal with such awkward questions in order to get closer to the statistical truth? Just roll the dice? Indeed a possibility – albeit a bit more complicated than it sounds at first.
Today's episode revolves around so-called »embarrassing characteristics«. Alcohol problems, doping in sports, and the sometimes still sensitive topic of Corona vaccination – our blogging statisticians tell us what role social desirability plays. In addition to methods from science, Dr. Sascha Feth and Dr. Jochen Fiedler also take a closer look at the number of unreported cases of Corona infection and the start of the pandemic in Italy and Germany. As always, Esther Packullat guides the podcast with questions.
More information on the Corona dark figure can be found in our Blog »Streuspanne«.
Our statisticians were also guests on the podcast »Datenaffaire« and talked in detail about the calculation of the dark figure. You can listen to the interview here[only available in German].
